Mediamerica: form, content, and consequence of mass communication
A trip to the library will show you that there have been thousands of books written about media. Each medium has been covered in depth, so why another mass media book?
Mediamerica has grown out of some frustrations I’ve had as a teacher. I have looked for a text that communicates to students some of the excitement I’ve experienced in my involvement with mass media—a text that goes beyond facts and figures to the heart and soul of the mass communication process.
You will find names, places, and statistics here, but I think history is most relevant when it relates to what is happening now. In short, my emphasis in this text is on what is happening as well as what has happened. We will explore the whys as well as the whats. Why did rock music rise to dominate popular music? Why has the Super Bowl come to be the most popular sporting event? All mediated phenomena offer clues about ourselves and our culture.
