A Documentary History of Chinese Communism

The critical commentaries which we have interspersed among the, documents are necessarily interpretations of history, no mote perfey or final than the writings of historical workers in any new and uy, trodden field. In them, we have attempted to give a connected runniny account of the major turns and developments in Chinese Communiy Strategy over the years. Together, these documents and commentatig, like the actors and chorus in a Greek drama, reveal some of the insid, story of practical revolution, the aims and assumptions of the leader, the doctrines and slogans they used, their tactics and organization methods, up to their final conquest of power. Naturally, this storys highly superficial, if only because of the limitations of space. We have not been able in the scope of this volume to get far beyond the obvious signposts, we have not pursued the Russian connection exhaustively through Comintern channels nor at the Moscow end, nor have we tried to describe the great expansion of Chinese Communist’ power it the petiod since 1937. Yet the ideas and conceptions by means o which Marxism-Leninism has been applied to China form a continuo thtead, which leads on into the future. This thread of ideas is th main subject of our survey.
