A people and a nation: a history of the United States: Brief Edition Vol B: Since 1865
A few years ago six historians set out to provide students and instructors with a comprehensive survey that tells the whole story of American history, both the public and the private sides of American life. The positive response to their book, A People and a Nation, indicates that they succeeded admirably in their task. A People and a Nation incorporates Americans of all backgrounds into the nation’s story and gives full coverage to minorities and women. The authors also integrate recent research in social history with the more traditional scholarship of political, diplomatic, and economic history.
Many instructors have urged the authors and the publisher to prepare a shorter version of A People and a Nation for use in either short courses or courses in which additional readings are assigned. This brief edition is intended to meet their needs. It is available in both a onevolume and a two-volume format. In the twovolume format, Volume A begins with the exploration of America and continues through the Reconstruction period (Chapters 1-15); Volume B begins with Reconstruction and extends to the present (Chapters 15-31). Chapter 15 on Reconstruction appears in both volumes in order to provide greater flexibility in matching the appropriate volume with the beginning and closing dates of a course.
